Who is the more evil character within Macbeth: Lady Macbeth or Macbeth?

In Macbeth many believe that Lady Macbeth is the more evil character, however Lady Macbeth never took action, Macbeth was the one doing all the killing. If someone told another that they should kill someone, and they got caught, it would be the killer who would be sent to jail, not the man who said to. Aristotle said that tragic characters create their own downfall, and Macbeth is considered to be a tragic character, although many think it was Lady Macbeth who created his downfall. Macbeth created his own downfall due to his own mistakes, he didn't have to listen to Lady Macbeth, but he did. He didn’t have to kill Banquo, but he did.Firstly, you find out how Macbeth acts early on in the play, and secondly, you get to see what he is capable of on his own. Finally, you get to see what an egotistic, broken man filled with rage and power looks like. Lady Macbeth was not at fault for the actions of Macbeth, which therefore means Macbeth is the more evil character.

Without any external influences Macbeth decided to kill both of the guards.“Oh, yet I do repent me That I did kill them” (2,3,102) This quote, which comes from an earlier scene of the play, truly depicts what Macbeth is really like because it shows that he was fine with killing the innocent guards even though he did not need to. This scene is also the first time we see Macbeth begin to go behind Lady Macbeth's back. “Repent” is an important word in this quote because it shows just how easily and soon into the play he could lie and let out his rage upon innocent people. Macbeth then begins over exaggerating the situation to show his loyalty. For example Macbeth says: “Who can be wise, amazed, temperate and furious, Loyal and neutral” (2,3) in this quote he’s lying saying that he killed them in an act of loyalty and rage. Many people at the time have been through a battle and seeing Macbeth commit treason towards his king was meant to make the viewer’s hatred towards Macbeth stronger.

Macbeth leaves Lady Macbeth out of his plan and shows he's capable of doing all this evil on his own. “let your remembrance apply to Banquo” (3,2) This quote is one of the most important in play due to the fact that it's the first time Macbeth lied to Lady Macbeth's face. The quote also shows that Macbeth is in control over what was once ‘their’ evil plan. “Remembrance” is an important word in this quote because in this scenario it’s the exact opposite. He is telling someone about feeling bad or feeling remorse for a friend who he just killed which shows his heart is filled with pure evil. In this scene Macbeth says “O, full of scorpions my mind is, dear wife!” (3,2) He uses this metaphor to show his anger towards Lady Macbeth because she told Macbeth that she shouldn’t mourn for Banquo even though he just had him killed.

Macbeth is so confident in himself that he believes nothing can kill him. “fear not, Macbeth, no man that’s born of a Woman shall e’er have power upon thee” (5,3) The reason that this quote is so important is because it shows his confidence and inflated ego. Macbeth believes he’s an unstoppable force and thinks nothing can kill him which shows why he kills everyone wants dead just like a very evil man Joseph Stalin who would kill anyone in the way of his rain of terror. “Macbeth” is so important to this quote because it emphasises what he's become. Macbeth has gotten to the point where he believes himself to be invincible and that not a single person on the earth can hurt him. Macbeth is then told that there is an army and before the servant can finish telling Macbeth it’s the English, he interrupts and begins to list: “geese, villain?” (5,3) This furthermore shows how much he doesn't care about any threat because he believes he's unstoppable. In this quote the comma used was very important because it mocks the servant. It's as if he's showing the servant how much better he is or how little he cares about the matter.

Throughout Macbeth's journey, he made an abundant amount of bad choices. Macbeth instead listened to the voice of others rather than his own heart, and killed so many innocent people. For this reason he's the more evil character. Macbeth lost everything from his own doing: his friends, his dignity, and his life.
